Sizes XL to 3X: How a Small-Town Boutique Actually Buys for Curvy
What "size inclusive" usually means — and why we do it differently.
There's a thing that happens in boutiques that our customers have described to us a hundred times, always in the same flat tone.
You walk in. The clothes are cute. You find the rack. And there are three pieces in your size, all of them the same style, all of them shapeless, and all of them in black.
That's what "size inclusive" often means in practice: the store ordered a token XL and hung it at the end of the rack.
We're a small-town boutique that started in Oakes, North Dakota, and we've built our curvy section deliberately over years, because that flat tone got old. This is how we actually do it — partly so you know what to expect from us, and partly because it'll make you a sharper shopper anywhere.
Curvy is a different pattern, not a bigger size
This is the single most important thing to understand, and most people have never had it explained to them.
When a brand "grades up" a garment, it scales the whole pattern proportionally — waist, hip, shoulder, arm, everything by the same percentage. That works fine up to a point and then it stops working, because bodies don't get bigger uniformly. Most women gain proportionally more through the hip, bust and thigh than through the shoulder and rib.
So a graded-up XL fits your hips and hangs off your shoulders. Or fits your bust and strangles your arms. It's not you. It's the math.
How we buy it
Three things we hold to at market:
Curvy is a real section, not an afterthought. When we love a style and it comes in the full size range, we buy the full range, not just the safe sizes. Not every style is made in every size, so not every piece we carry goes to 3X — but the ones that do are chosen on purpose.
Depth, not tokens. One 3X on a rack isn't an offer, it's an apology. If a style is going to work for a 3X customer, we order it in real quantity, because if it sells out the first weekend, the customer who came for it drives home empty-handed and doesn't come back.
The good stuff, not the leftovers. The prints, the denim, the dresses, the things with structure. There's an unspoken industry habit of sending the boring pieces up the size range. We buy against it.
What actually fits well through XL–3X
Not fashion rules — nobody needs more of those. Just what we watch work in the fitting room.
A Few From the Curvy Edit
Three we've actually watched sell well, cut for the body they're made for — not graded up from a smaller sample.
Come try it on
Online sizing is a guess no matter how good the chart is. If you can get to us, our fitting rooms are the point — we'll pull three sizes without being asked and we'll tell you honestly when something isn't doing you any favors. You'll find our curvy sizes in Oakes, Medora and Hill City.
And if you're ordering online and you're between sizes, message us before you buy. A real person answers.
